Hantaviruses are a family of viruses that cause HPS (Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome). While HPS is a rare but dongerous disease that causes severe lung problems and sometimes can lead to death. Mammals such as dogs and cats can be infected with a Hantavirus, but they appear to be unaffected by HPS. Some researchers have found antibodies in dogs who have come in contact with rodents that carry the Hantavirus, but the dogs don’t develop the pulmonary symptoms.

The dogs also don’t pass the virus to humans. But, they may facilitate infection in humans by bringing rodents that carry the Hantavirus into the presence of humans, who then can catch the disease by coming in contact with rodent excretions, urine, saliva, or nesting materials. also the infection may caused by breathing particles that contain the Hantavirus. if a person is cleaning a shed, where there was some rodent excretions, the particles that contain the Hantavirus can be released into the air and breath it in.

Don’t worry if you own rodents from the pet store, like hamsters and rats, because they are not carriers of the Hantavirus, and there is no risk while cleaning their cage or interacting with them.

Does My Dog Have Hantavirus?

No. This infection happen from rodents to humans, only. In fact, dogs may show similar symptoms to the condition that is seen in people infected by the Hantavirus, such as fever, muscular aches, coughing and bleeding disorders. But, the Hantavirus is not the cause of these symptoms in dogs, but another health condition or a disease, But in this case you also have to take your dog to the Vet.
